Boyang MU (CREST) “Incentives and Reputation in Delegated Staking Protocols”

Abstract: Delegated staking enables operators to manage assets delegated by investors to secure blockchain networks. It widely exists in many DeFi protocols, such as liquid staking and restaking that enhance capital efficiency by allowing staked assets to remain liquid and be reused across multiple services. However, this flexibility amplifies risks, as operators can exploit attack opportunities with limited financial repercussions. We develop a theoretical framework where strategic operators weigh short-term attack gains against long-term reputation losses. Our model demonstrates how reputation dynamics discipline operator behavior, thereby underpinning the security of those protocols.
