Brianne DUBOIS (ENS-PSL) – “A Computational Sociology of Cultural Inequalities”

Abstract : 

This talk presents my research in computational sociology, which examines cultural inequalities through case studies of French contemporary art and beauty labor among hairdressers and interior designers. More specifically, I will focus on a published study entitled “Public and Private French Contemporary Art Museums Facing International Dynamics.” In a country marked by a strong public cultural tradition, the rapid expansion of private art foundations over the past two decades raises important questions about the reconfiguration of institutional roles and hierarchies in the French contemporary art world. Drawing on an original dataset covering the programming of four major institutions in the Paris region between 2016 and 2020, I analyze how public and private organizations position themselves within national and international artistic fields. The findings identify three main institutional functions: contributing to the reproduction of international hierarchies in the French context, consolidating established French artistic reputations, and—more marginally—certifying emerging artists. The results also highlight a clear divide between public and private institutions. While public museums navigate both national and international arenas, private foundations primarily act as importers of already internationally recognized artists.
