SUMMARY:Camille Terrier (Queen Mary University of London) - "Condence and College Applications: Evidence from a Randomized Intervention"
DESCRIPTION:Applied Micro Seminar : Every Tuesday \nTime: 12:15 pm – 13:30 pm\nDate: 12th of September\nRoom : 3001 \n  \nCamille Terrier (Queen Mary University of London) – Condence and College Applications: Evidence from a Randomized Intervention \n  \nAbstract : \nThis paper investigates the role played by self-condence in college applications.\nUsing incentivized experiments\, we measure the self-condence of more than 2\,000\nstudents applying to colleges in France. The best female and low-SES students\nsignicantly underestimate their rank in the grade distribution compared to male and\nhigh-SES students. By matching our survey data with administrative data on real\ncollege applications and admissions\, we show that miscalibrated condence aects\ncollege choice controlling for grades. We then estimate the impact of a randomized\nintervention that corrects students’ under- and overcondence by informing them of\ntheir real rank in the grade distribution. The intervention fully osets the impact of\nunder- and overcondence for college applications. Providing feedback also makes the\nbest students\, who were initially undercondent\, apply to more ambitious programs\nwith stronger eects for female and low-SES students. Among top students\, our\nintervention closes 72% of the gender gap in admissions to elite programs\, and 95%\nof the social gap. \n  \n  \n  \nOrganizers:\nBenoît SCHMUTZ (Pôle d’économie du CREST)\nClément MALGOUYRES (Pôle d’économie du CREST)\nSponsors:\nCREST \n
