SUMMARY:José De Sousa (RITM-U. Paris-Sud) - “Trickle Down Affirmative Action: A Case Study in Chess”\, joint with Muriel Niederle (Stanford)
DESCRIPTION:\nThe Microeconometrics Seminar: Every Tuesday at 12:15 pm.\nTime: 12:15 pm – 1:15 pm\nDate: 10th of April 2018\nPlace: Room 3001.\nJosé De Sousa (RITM-U. Paris-Sud) – “Trickle Down Affirmative Action: A Case Study in Chess”\, joint with Muriel Niederle (Stanford) \nAbstract: Vertical gender segregation is one of the most stubborn features of labor markets: high-ranking positions are primarily held by men in Business\, Politics and Science. Can we implement an affirmative action (AA) to erase this segregation? To answer this question we investigate a clear AA\, where we have a good measure of “ability” even of people who did not directly benefit from the action. Chess\, which is grappling with a huge vertical segregation problem\, offers a unique opportunity because we have a clear idea how good someone is. France introduced an AA for women in its club competitions in the beginning of the nineties\, which helps us to answer two central questions. How much does the AA benefit the selected pool? Does the AA trickle-down? In other words\, does it lead to higher investment (benefits) of a whole group? \n\n\nOrganizers:\nLaurent Davezies (CREST – ENSAE)\,  Arne Uhlendorff (CREST – ENSAE) & Yannick Guyonvarch (CREST – ENSAE)\nSponsors:\nCREST\nLunch registration:\nfood provided\, no registration\n\n
