Abstract : We extend static linear factor models in a semiparametric framework, by assuming the loadings are unknown functions that depend on some exogeneous covariates. Since the latter covariates may be possibly numerous, their effect is summarized through individual univariate indices.
We state the consistency and the asymptotic normality of our estimated factors and loading functions, when the number of individuals and their history length go to the infinity (large N, large T asymptotics). By simulation and a real data experiment, the relevance of this approach is empirically shown.

Ewa BATYRA (Center for Demographics Studies CED Barcelona) – “Disparities in the timing of family formation within countries of the Global South: Patterns and determinants”

Abstract : “Large disparities in the age at which women start having children and enter their first union are striking features of family formation patterns in many countries of the Global South. Despite being vital aspects of social stratification, the determinants of these pronounced disparities remain poorly understood. I will give an overview of existing studies documenting variation in the age of childbearing and union formation within African, Latin American and Asian countries. Then, I will present research that used Demographic and Health Surveys from over 50 countries and different measures and models of variability to examine the potential role of income and educational inequality in shaping these disparities. I will show that variation in the timing of family formation is larger within countries with higher levels of income inequality. Moreover, in many nations, the strength with which education affects the timing of family formation differs within populations, and this heterogeneity is more pronounced in countries with lower-quality schooling. I will discuss the importance of conducting cross-country comparative analyses and examining the role of macro-level factors related to socioeconomic inequality to enhance our understanding of family formation globally.”

Abstract : ”

Can union and firm market power counteract each other ? What are the output and welfare effects of employer and union labor market power? Using data from French manufacturing firms, we leverage mass layoff shocks to competitors to identify a negative effect of employment concentration on wages. In line with the reduced form evidence and the French institutional setting, we develop and estimate a multi-sector bargaining model that incorporates employer market power. We find that, in the absence of unions, output decreases by 0.48 percent because they partially counteract distortions coming from oligopsony power. The reallocation of employment across space is key to realize the output gains from unions.”
